COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
IRONERS, FLATWORK, THERMAL FLUID
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of the Commercial Item Description.
1. Intended use. This commercial item description covers a thermal fluid, flatwork, ironer (see 5.1).
2. Salient characteristics.
2.1 Design and construction. The ironer shall consist of framing, removable side panels, chest, rolls, drive and a pressure system and a safety guard. The length of the ironer shall depend on the number of rolls and the width shall not be greater than 13 feet. The ironer shall have a smooth profile. The drive and pressure system shall be located inside the machine or by the machine in an out of the way location. The main frame and removable side panels shall be enameled.
2.1.1 Frames. The frames shall be steel and shall provide a sturdy and lightweight machine.
2.1.2 Panels. The panels shall be easily removable and shall have safety catches to present accidental removal.
2.1.3 Chest. Each chest shall be designed exclusively for thermal fluid as a heating medium. Chests shall be fabricated so that the chests shall end no less than 4 inches above the center line of the rolls. The oil pressure drop during operation shall be such that the resulting temperature drop in the chest shall not exceed 20OF. Chests shall be capable of accommodating a working oil pressure which insures the required temperature of 450OF.
2.1.4 Rolls.
2.1.4.1 Roll spring. The rolls shall be spring type to permit the effective use of a vacuum exhaust. The vacuum system shall provide for the rolls to extract moisture from the padding and provide a steam free atmosphere around the ironer. The combination of the vacuum system and drilled individually fitted springs shall result in minimum radiated heat. A canopy is not required.
